ARTISTS INCLUDING JULIAN OPIE, BRIDGET RILEY AND DAMIEN HIRST CREATE ART BOOK FOR BABIES

A unique art book for babies, Art for Baby, has been published by Templar Publishing, in association with the OUTSET Contemporary Art Fund, with a donation from every book sold going to the NSPCC. The book features black and white, high contrast images by leading international contemporary artists including Damien Hirst, Gary Hume, Julian Opie and Bridget Riley, who have all donated their work for free.

Research has shown that babies respond more readily to high contrast black and white imagery, and this book aims to promote and encourage early cultural appreciation. Dr Miriam Stoppard comments, “Inspiring little minds with big ideas – what a brilliant concept. This is an excellent way to start sharing the world of art with your baby and nurturing their visual skills.”

The book was conceived by Yana Peel, a founder of OUTSET Contemporary Art Fund, when she noticed how her baby would stare at the Julian Opie black and white painting on the wall of her home. After talking to experts in child development, she had the idea of creating a book that could be shared with babies using some of the most famous black and white images in contemporary art.

Julian Opie, whose work Raphael is featured on the cover, is supporting the project. “As a baby my second daughter would gaze intently at a Paul Morrison black and white landscape that hangs in our living room. I realised that the strong, simple flowers and trees made sense to her and were mesmerizing.”

Artists whose work features in Art for Baby include Josef Albers,  Patrick Caulfield, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Gary Hume, Kasmir Malevich, Paul Morrison, Takashi Murakami, Julian Opie, Bridget Riley and David Shrigley. Their images including Patrick Caulfield’s Duck. Takashi Murakami’s Flower and Damien Hirst’s Hypovase Prazosin Hydrochloride  have been specifically chosen for maximum visual stimulation.
